Puede tomar reconocimientos (acknowledgments) y juramentos escritos (jurats) sobre la firma de un documento, tomar juramentos y afirmaciones orales, ser testigo de firmas, y certificar que una copia de un documento es fiel a un original que se le presenta — siempre verificando la identidad de la persona y que firma o jura por su propia voluntad.
A Notary Public can take acknowledgments and written jurats on a signature, administer oral oaths and affirmations, witness signatures, and certify that a copy is a true copy of an original document presented — always after verifying the signer's identity and that the person is signing or swearing freely.
¿Qué NO puede hacer un Notary Public?What can't a Notary Public do?
No puede notarizar si la persona no está presente, si no puede identificarla, si duda de que la persona entienda lo que firma, si la persona no actúa por su propia voluntad, si la Notary Public es parte del documento o tiene un interés económico en él, ni completar certificados en blanco o ya firmados. Tampoco puede dar asesoría legal, representar a alguien ante un tribunal o agencia, ni actuar como especialista legal, a menos que sea abogada con licencia en Massachusetts.
A Notary Public cannot notarize when the signer isn't physically present, can't be identified, appears not to understand what they're signing, isn't acting freely, when the Notary Public is a party to the document or has a financial interest in it, or complete a blank or pre-signed certificate. A Notary Public also cannot give legal advice, represent someone before a court or agency, or hold out as a legal specialist unless the Notary Public is a Massachusetts-licensed attorney.
